Fall 2009 Picnic on Art Island

September 21, 2009

Oct09_Pearce
Anne Austin Pearce has been selected to participate in Kansas City Limited Editions.  In conjunction with the print release, the next Picnic on Art Island will take place on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at 6:00 pm in Anne’s studio in Fairway, Kansas. The meal will be catered by Blue Nile, Ethiopian Restaurant in the River Market district.

KANSAS CITY LIMITED EDITION PRINT

Leopard Baby was selected from a seldom seen series of works by Anne Austin Pearce entitled Animal Babies. These illustrations of newborn hybrids depart from her work of the last few years. The opacity of their fur or skin renders them as specific characters as opposed to the translucent apparitions in moments of healing as found in her other series of works such as Humours. Allan Winkler was selected as the fourth artist to participate in Kansas City Limited Editions.  In conjunction with the print release, the fourth Picnic on Art Island will take place on Saturday, July 25, 2009 at 6:00 pm in Allan’s studio at 125 East 12th Street. The meal will be created by local chef, Michael Foust, whose new endeavor, The Farmhouse in the River Market, features classically creative comfort foods of all types, focusing on the “tip-to-tail” method, and using the best of the available crops from a variety of local farmers.

JULY 2009 KANSAS CITY LIMITED EDITION PRINT

For the July 2009 Kansas City Limited Edition print, Allan Winkler combined two of his signature paper cut-out portraits to create a unique diptych. Together, the two works form a new narrative in which one figure listens wide-eyed as his neighbor in profile weaves a tale as mysterious as the severed arms that float in the background. Punctuating both figures are multi-colored sunbursts resembling the reflection of sunlight, chakras, or tattoos. The 13 x 20 inch limited edition print is an archival pigment ink print on cotton rag paper, from an edition of 50, and is accompanied by a certificate signed and numbered by the artist.

Kacy Maddux was selected as the third artist to participate in Kansas City Limited Editions.  In conjunction with the print release, the third Picnic on Art Island will take place on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at 6:00 pm in Kacy’s studio at 3826 Genessee.

JUNE 2009 KANSAS CITY LIMITED EDITION PRINT

For the June 2009 Kansas City Limited Edition Print, Kacy Maddux created a new drawing, which eloquently renders biological, intellectual, historical, and spiritual anatomy, through its layers of fine ink lines. Maddux ’s life-scale drawings address the multi-layered nature of identity. Maddux states “I use drawing to record my convoluted ideas about my condition.”  Her recent series of works is the result of a cumulative quest to map out the most perfect point of intersection between the objective physicality of a body and “the ambiguous, irrational subjective experience.”
